Just in case you haven’t gotten your fill of whistleblowers in movies and television, there are plenty of songs listen to. From hardcore punk songs to trip-hop ballads, whistleblowing is a topic of interest that knows no demographic. Here are just a few songs which shed light on whistleblowing:
Against All Authority: “Committing the Truth”
Taking an ironic stance as the culpable corporation, Against All Authority mocks big corporations and shows their compassion for the whistleblower.
Excerpt:
“Just keep your mouth shutAnd don't you try to obstruct us
Your act of conscience protects everyone but now you've lost our trust
And now you're a target for us
Whistleblower, you're a whistleblower
I heard you commit the truth
And we'll deny and we'll dispute it
Your integrity protects us all…”
Faithless: “Mass Destruction”
A trip-hop electronica anti-war ballad, “Mass Destruction” uses the well-known Enron scandal to reference corporate greed. The song then goes on to ask people to take action rather than stand idle.
Excerpt:
“Whether Halliburton or Enron or anyoneGreed is a weapon of mass destruction
We need to find courage, overcome
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction”
Chicks on Speed: Class War
With a bleeker tone, Chicks on Speed’s electroclash “Class War” mentions specifics when identifying the sources of American fraud. Their extremism and anger towards corruption forms an angry but powerful song.
Excerpt:
“The most well-run casino inthe world, capitalism
it's a shoddy set-up for suckers
Enron, Worldcom, Imclone
& Tyco (now add
Manesman, Parmalat, etc.)
rob, cheat and defraud at will. . . Where are these terrorists anyway
on Wall Street, the FBI and CIA?
You are the public enemy number one
if you demand your democracy, your equal rights
those that fight”
The Flower Kings: “The Truth Will Set You Free”
The Scottish prog rock band eloquently expresses the impact of honesty, in their 5 part epic song “The Truth Will Set You Free.”
Excerpt
“Troubled times, go thru the motionswhen leaders excel in their lies
while they squeeze the flower they took as a loan
until it fade out and die. The Truth will set you free
we will stand up to the lie
with this heart bigger than America
no more kiss will seal the lies”
