In response to an inquiry from Congressman Joe Barton (R-Texas), ranking member on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have provided data and information regarding fraud and abuses within Medicare and Medicaid. The report notes that the newly-formed Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team ("Project HEAT") has already brought charges against 103 defendants involving more than $100 million in fraud since May. In addition, in September the Department of Justice announced a $2.3 billion settlement against drug giant Pfizer Inc. for the illegal promotion of certain drugs.
