66 million. Not too shabby.
That was the amount the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Division recovered in 2010. Most of the sum came from legal settlements with the drug companies.
Leading the multi-state litigation teams that worked with the federal government, Representatives from the Massachusetts Medicaid Fraud Division took charge as lead negotiators. Settlements with AstraZeneca L.P. and GlaxoSmithKline brought in more than $28 million for the state of Massachusetts, and $806 million to nationwide Medicaid Programs.
This breaks the previous set record by $14.3 million, set in 2009.
North Carolina recovered more than $53 million, according to Attorney General Roy Cooper.
“Medicaid cheaters rob taxpayers, hurt needy patients and push medical costs higher for all of us,” Cooper said in a statement. “We’re stopping the waste and abuse and making violators pay.”
While $66 millions is no frivolous amount, it is merely a drop in the bucket for some of these drug companies. There are potentially hundreds of millions of dollars being overbilled to the government in comparable Medicare and Medicaid fraud scenarios.
